The Post-Graduate Fellowship Program in Emergency Medicine at Max Healthcare consists of a two-year curriculum that will be divided into 24 clinical modules that will cover the breadth of emergency medicine.
At the successful conclusion of the program, the graduating fellows will be able to practice independently within emergency departments as well-trained physicians, ands they will receive a “Certificate of Completion” from the RRIEM at the George Washington University, with the university hologram on it.
Curriculum
The fellowship program will focus on a specific clinical module topic each month. Each day the fellows will receive a clinical case presentation with a case-based education power point presentation that will last approximately two and a half hour four day in a week, and each afternoon the residents will round on patients in the emergency department with faculty. One day a week, the fellows will have a journal club article reviews, simulation exercises, guest speakers from senior consultants and departmental audit.
In addition to the overall curriculum structure, each fellow will be assessed by the consultants by filling up of evaluation forms for power point presentation, monthly evaluation, bed side evaluation form.
Each module will begin with a pre-test to gauge the fellows’ academic knowledge on the clinical topics, and each module will end with a post-test to measure the fellows’ level of comprehension and mastery of the materials during the module session. The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) and the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD) have developed a “Model Curriculum for Emergency Medicine”, and this model curriculum will serve as a basis for the fellowship program’s modular topics.
Educational Program
The fellows will receive daily instruction from a combination of faculty from RRIEM and MAX HEALTHCARE. These educational experiences will include two and a half hour four day in a week morning seminars with an emphasis on case-based teachings that will focus on the monthly module’s topic. The fellows will be given a topic, and then the instructor will lead the fellows through a power point presentation & discussion that includes: developing a differential diagnosis, ordering appropriate laboratory and radiology diagnostic tests, finding the diagnosis, and managing and treating the clinical problem. Instructors will then provide clinical teaching through bedside clinical rounds of specific patients.
One day a week, the program will dedicate 3 hours for educational conference for the fellows that will include didactic lectures, case conferences, journal article discussions, guest lecturers & departmental audit. During these 3 hours, the fellows will be excused from clinical responsibilities, and will have protected time for their educational development. Fundamental components of the education program include:
Lectures on the modular topic of the month
Evidence-based medicine
Journal article discussions
Grand rounds and guest speakers
Morbidity and mortality (M&M) conferences
Follow up case discussions on patients admitted through the emergency department
Procedures and skills seminars
Presentations by the fellows
The content of the weekly seminars will also focus on the modular topic for the particular month. The fellows will give a prepared lecture on a specific subject. These presentations will improve the fellows speaking and presentations skills. The Emergency Medicine faculty will also invite experts from other fields such as cardiology, surgery, and pediatrics to give guest lectures on important topics that are related to emergency medicine. Fellows will be expected to read assigned chapters in their textbooks and to read relevant journal articles.
In addition, fellows will be encouraged to initiate and conduct research projects pertinent to emergency medicine, and they will be required to write a scholarly articles that are worthy of publication. The fellows will be expected to work on a research project with the faculty, and they will be required to submit one abstract or oral presentation per year at a conference. The fellows should also submit one paper per year to a journal for potential publication.
