MCEM ELIGIBILTY FOR ALL

It is worth to note that the College of Emergency Medicine has finally granted permission to the candidates interested to sit for their Membership Examination irrespective of their training at a particular institution / group in India.
The latest regulation ( Autumn 2009 )regarding the same is posted in the College Website and is really a great step for many Emergency physicians in India who are trained by different universities in India and abroad.
In a further clarification obtained by one of our Fellows the College have clearly stated that our fellows will be eligible to sit for the Examination
(All Parts) if they have experience mentioned in the latest regulation.
For further details please refer to the mail below from Mr Viv Bovingdon, Senior Administrator, CEM, UK.

Subject: RE: MCEM ELIGIBILITY.

Dear Dr

I acknowledge receipt of your email and note the comments contained therein. The eligibility criteria for our examinations are stipulated in the MCEM Regulations which are on the College website.

I give below the extract relating to Part A:

4. Criteria for Eligibility

4.1 The candidate must hold a primary medical qualification that is acceptable to the United Kingdom General Medical Council for Full Registration or to the Irish Medical Council for Full or Temporary Registration.

4.2 The candidate must also hold full current registration with the required authority. For the UK and Ireland, this will be the General Medical Council or the Irish Medical Council.

4.2 Part A

Part A may be taken in the first year after gaining full registration with the Medical Council (i.e. after at least 12 months of medical practice after gaining primary medical qualification). This will be the second Foundation year or equivalent.

You must pass Part A before being permitted to progress to Parts B and C. For further information I would suggest that you review the MCEM Regulations. You will see that you must have completed a certain amount of time before being permitted to sit the examinations. The course that you are on does not relate to your eligibility it is your experience.

Regards.

Viv

Ravi,
Sorry I am not in, or even visited India (yet!). I am a Consultant in Emergency Medicine in Manchester, UK so I can't answer your query. There is a very good market for middle grade (staff grade/registrar level) doctors post-MCEM in UK as there is a shortage. If you are interested email me on cdibble@nhs.net.
regards
Colin
