A shocking fact — Neither of the two leading public hospitals in Hyderabad, Gandhi and Osmania, offer emergency medicine course, nor do they have trained EM doctors even as the number of accidents are on rise.
At a time when accidents are rising in City, the hospitals are dealing with acute shortage of emergency medicine (EM) doctors. The role of emergency medicine doctors becomes critical in saving precious lives. Emergencies mainly occur in cases like road accidents, cardiac problems, convulsions, and so on. In many cases, the duty doctors provide first-aid to the patient and then shift the patient to the doctors concerned.

“Most of the times, patients in need of critical care are attended to by junior doctors, physicians or any other expert doctor in the casualty ward. Thus, most of the emergencies are handled by the department after getting a call from a junior or an emergency medical officer. Even if the doctor happens to be competent, there is a lack of EM qualified doctors who can manage patients of any emergency condition in a more professional manner,” said Dr K Suresh, president, Osmania Medical College Doctor’s Forum.
