Faculty Members of the University at Max Healthcare,

Our fellow doctors , Distinguished guests, awardees of the masters in EM, Representatives of the Media & Press.

Ladies and Gentlemen

It is a matter of great pleasure and proud moment for me to see a dream come true. And so is this opportunity to stand with pride and deliver the welcome Address.

A specialty widespread in the First world countries, Emergency Medicine emerged in India way back in 1998 with the birth of Society for Emergency Medicine in India and academic departments at Hyderabad and Chennai. Since then we have marched forward and in the year 2009 Medical Council of India recognised EM as 29th primary specialty. India now need 8000 trained ER physicians to man the EDs of tertiary care hospitals located across the country. As on date MCI has approved only 10 residency seats and majority of these trained workforce are generated from INDO US or INDO BRITISH collaborations. We hope that MCI will take adequate steps to recognize these programs as equivalent training in Emergency Medicine.

As we have seen the progress of EMS in our country we now have state funded EMS services in 9 states of India. We will probably need at least 25000 properly trained EMTs to man our country wide ambulance network.

We also need a large cohort of properly trained healthcare personnel and first responders in the field of resuscitation to save LIVES lost day in and day out due to lack of systems that promote chain of survival.

Way back, in 2008, the dream to develop all these had taken its shape and was transformed into reality. And friends, this stands before you as firmly bonded association with Ronald Reagan Institute of Emergency Medicine, George Washington University. Since this collaboration took off, there’s no looking back. This recognition has gained name and fame with bounces and leaps. Yes, it would not be right if at this juncture the people behind this initiave, behind this proud moment are not remembered, not thanked today. Please join me in extending a heartfelt gratitude to our MD and CEO Dr Pervez Ahmed, Director Emergency Medicine and post graduate Medical education Dr Talat Halim and Dr Arti Verma, currently the vice president of Max Medical education Initiatives whose intelligent and visionary efforts have resulted in to this historical day at Max Healthcare.

To strengthen the team of emergency medicine physicians, the need was identified for the trained and certified Emergency Medical technicians. We had been fortunate to be blessed with great partners. After GW Max healthcare had joined with Jamia Hamdard University to launch one of its kind, and the first in north India, the UGC recognized program, the three year Bachelor’s in Emergency and Trauma Care Technology. I take this opportunity to apprise this gathering that our first batch of EMT’s has successfully passed out and the graduates are very well present amongst us this moment.

To add onto the list of laurels, next in the chain falls Max ITO, the Max International Training Organization. Max ITO was formed and recognized by American Heart Association in 2008 and became their 6th center in India to promote education in the field of resuscitation.

Since then, Max ITO has trained and certified 1417 BLS and 1283 ACLS providers. With its outstanding performance and whopping statistics it is now recognized as the fastest growing ITO in India. On 13th July 2011 Dr Vanita Mittal, one of our graduating resident along with me was conferred the position of the regional faculty of heart association in Asia Pacific region which only reminds me the teacher student Duo of Drs Banting and Best who have discovered Insulin in UK in 1921 while Banting was a third year medical students.

For the past 3 years max has witnessed intensive training from the basics to the advanced skills in field of emergency medicine. Started with 15 residents who are now trained Emergency Medicine physicians, we now have more than 40 EM residents under training. 31 Emergency Medical Technicians under training and the fastest growing ITO, we can proudly announce that cohesively we are the fastest proliferating Department of Emergency Medicine in India.

Today this August gathering is going to witness as well as celebrate the passing out of the first batch of ER physicians and felicitation of the 1st batch of EMTs. At this moment we also acknowledge the sincere and consistent hard work by the entire team of the department put behind for this day to come. I salute all the graduating residents for working with us day and night at every possible hurdle, at every possible opportunity and make this dream a true success.

The strive for success will be on ….It is still felt …..And miles to go, before we sleep.

before I conclude I must quote Dr. Abdul Kalam, Honble ex President of India who in his book Ignited MINDS has rightly said “Learning gives creativity; creativity leads to thinking, Thinking provides knowledge; knowledge makes you great.”

Thank you and Jai Hind………………..

They should first spread out. Then they can disseminate learned knowledge and skills. And that is what will make this discipline widely known.I got a call from a doctor in Orrisa who wanted to know what is emergency medicine?because he had never heard of such a thing
Congratulations to all and Tamorish in particular. The whole exercise was no less achieving a moon. From moon, I also remember that moon has some black spots and I see something similar in this whole beautiful thing otherwise, which concerns me as the foundation if not laid rock solid will damage the castle being built. Hope the next year moon will be fully spotless. All the best!!
